Before 1945, lifeguarding was confined to a few counties in Ireland that is in Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Dublin and Clare. Indeed the teaching of swimming and water safety as we know it was done on an ad hoc basis around the country, but mostly in the cities of Dublin and Cork where indoor swimming pools were available....
